The Chelsea player who failed his first-team audition against Lincoln City miserably

Unsurprisingly, Enzo Maresca rang the changes for Chelsea’s Carabao Cup tie against Lincoln City on Tuesday.

After falling behind in the first half, Chelsea were able to win the game, beating the League One side 2-1.

One change Maresca made was forced, with Filip Jorgensen having to come in for Robert Sanchez.

Sanchez was suspended for the match following his sending off at Old Trafford last weekend, though it is likely that he would have been rested anyway. Whatever the case, Jorgensen had a chance to impress Maresca.

Filip Jorgensen fails audition at LNER Stadium

As a result of his red card in Chelsea’s 2-1 defeat to Manchester United, Sanchez is under pressure again, but Jorgensen failed to add to it after a poor performance against Lincoln.

The 23-year-old struggled with Lincoln’s directness and made one error that led to the home side getting a shot off.

Jorgensen is not happy about being the No.2 at Chelsea, but the Denmark international did nothing to show that he should be the No.1.

He failed his audition at the LNER Stadium and you would now expect Sanchez to return to goal in Chelsea’s next match.

The Blues take on Sanchez’s former club Brighton & Hove Albion at Stamford Bridge this weekend.

Enzo Maresca reacts to Filip Jorgensen’s performance

Maresca had a bit of sympathy for Jorgensen, claiming that Lincoln’s long balls and set-pieces would not have been easy for any goalkeeper to deal with.

Speaking to football.london and the rest of the English media after the game, the Chelsea manager said: “I think that, I don’t know how many balls they put inside the box tonight, you know, throw-ins, free-kick, cross, so I think it was not easy for any goalkeepers, to be honest.”

If the Blues do decide that they want to sign an upgrade on Jorgensen and Sanchez, they are likely to turn to AC Milan’s Mike Maignan after targeting the Frenchman in the summer.

The Chelsea Chronicle understands that Maignan is still on Chelsea’s radar ahead of the expiration of his contract. His existing deal expires next year, meaning that the Club World Cup winners may be able to sign him on a free transfer.
