The free transfer swoop Chelsea must complete this summer instead of January panic buy, he’s one of Champions League’s top scorers

Chelsea are linked with several different strikers in the final days of the January transfer window, but we’d advise them to be patient and go after an individual who becomes a free agent in the summer.

The Blues are linked with some interesting names in the January window to strengthen the No.9 position. However, we’re worried about Chelsea making a panic buy before the window’s deadline on Monday.

Chelsea have been informed about Bayer Leverkusen striker Victor Boniface after his potential move to Saudi Arabia collapsed this month. Enzo Maresca’s side have joined the race for Brighton frontman Evan Ferguson, too.

Elsewhere, Chelsea enquired about Brighton forward Georginio Rutter, but they’ve been told he’s not available.

Chelsea should go prioritise Jonathan David in the summer instead of January panic

We would love to see the Blues play things a bit smarter and sniff out a gigantic opportunity to try sign a top-class striker for free later in 2025.

Lille frontman Jonathan David, 25, is out of contract with the French Ligue 1 club at the end of the season. If the Blues can bring him to Stamford Bridge in the summer on a free transfer, they could land themselves an outrageous signing.

Chelsea were scouting Lille striker David earlier in the season, so he’s a profile familiar to them.

In fact, recent rumours this month claimed that Chelsea do hold interest in signing David. Apparently, it’s much more likely he’ll sign a pre-contract agreement ahead of a summer move on a free transfer rather than join a new club in this mid-season window.

Jonathan David is enjoying sensational season

We’re not surprised that David is staying put in Lille for now as he’s flying high in their XI.

In 32 games across all competitions this season, the centre-forward’s scored 19 goals and created seven assists. This has included six goals so far in the Champions League group stages to make him one of the competition’s leading scorers this year.

David’s record of 103 goals in 205 Lille appearances since he joined them in 2020 is proof he’s extremely consistent. Aged 25, he should soon be entering his prime years as well.

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca claims youngster Marc Guiu is ready to play more, so we wouldn’t mind him competing with Nicolas Jackson for the second half of the season if it meant David joined in the summer.
