Chelsea’s transfer window has got up and running when it comes to defensive reinforcements, although the Blues have to be looking at a top midfielder next.

Xabi Alonso was crucial to the club completing the signing of Marco Palestra, with the player himself confirming he is set for Stamford Bridge.

The Blues are also pushing forward with interest in Maxence Lacroix, with the Frenchman having plenty of experience playing in a back three which is expected to be deployed by Alonso.

Chelsea’s next signing must be Adam Wharton

When it comes to what the club need next though, the reality that a top new central midfielder is going to become apparent when Enzo Fernandez gets his expected move to Real Madrid.

As for his replacement, it has become clear that Chelsea are desperate to bring in Adam Wharton, and this is who the club should put their full attention towards going forwards.

Chelsea need to find the ideal partner for Moises Caicedo, who excels in the physical aspects of the game rather than the technical areas.

This is where Wharton could thrive. His ability on the ball is rivalled by few in his position.

The Englishman created 44 chances and 14 big chances in the Premier League last season. No Chelsea player reached this number of big chances last season.

Despite this brilliance, he only registered five league assists, although he can expect the superior attackers at Stamford Bridge to finish off more of those chances.

One thing the Blues will have to keep in mind is that Wharton will not be able to replicate the goals which Fernandez did. He scored his first goal for Palace midway through last season.

Chelsea will need to find this elsewhere, however will be hoping a number of their attackers can step up in this department.

That portion of the pitch is already set for reinforcement in the form of Geovany Quenda, after they secured a deal for him more than 12 months ago.

They could also see Nicolas Jackson back in the side after his loan spell at Bayern Munich did not see him secure a permanent move there.
