Todd Boehly will be under real scrutiny if Chelsea make pointless move for former target

Over the last few years, Chelsea’s transfer strategy has been heavily criticised, and that is unlikely to change if they make one particular signing in 2026.

Co-sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley oversee recruitment at Stamford Bridge and have faced backlash from Chelsea supporters for some of the players that they have brought in.

Dave Fallows will also have a say on transfers when he takes up a role with the Club World Cup winners.

Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali are the men who have to sign everything off, though, and will undoubtedly face scrutiny alongside those below them if Chelsea revive their interest in Samu Aghehowa.

No need for Samu Aghehowa to be a priority for Chelsea

Chelsea came close to signing Aghehowa from Atletico Madrid last year but ended up pulling out of a deal.

Since then, Aghehowa has joined Porto, but the striker is once again being linked with a move to Stamford Bridge.

However, there is simply no need for him to be a priority for Chelsea at this moment in time. The Blues currently have Joao Pedro, Liam Delap, Marc Guiu and Tyrique George, who can all play up front.

Delap is close to returning from injury, so his absence is not something that the Conference League holders will have to worry about for much longer.

If the above names are not enough for Enzo Maresca, Emanuel Emegha will be joining Chelsea from sister club Strasbourg next year.

His addition alone would make Aghehowa such a redundant signing. Chelsea’s transfer strategy is really going to be under the microscope if he is brought in.

Why Samu Aghehowa may still appeal to Chelsea

Chelsea’s recruitment model has been based on signing young players with potential and high resale value.

Noni Madueke was a good example of this. The Blues bought the 23-year-old from PSV Eindhoven for roughly £30m before selling him to Arsenal for about £52m in the summer.

Considering that and how well Aghehowa has played at Porto, it is not hard to see the appeal. He has already scored eight goals this season after bagging 27 last term.

It is highly unlikely, but if Chelsea sell one of Pedro or Delap, then bringing in Aghehowa would make sense.

If they do not, though, Aghehowa will have to go down as a pointless addition to this Chelsea squad.
