The real reason why Samu Omorodion’s move to Chelsea is now off

It now looks unlikely that Chelsea will be signing Samu Omorodion from Atletico Madrid this summer.

Following his participation at the Olympic Games with Spain, Samu Omorodion was set to join Chelsea.

However, the striker’s move to Stamford Bridge has collapsed, and Chelsea have now turned their attention towards Joao Felix.

If Felix does go on to sign for Chelsea, it would be his second spell with the Blues following a loan stint with them back in the 2022/23 season.

Samu Omorodion’s move from Atletico Madrid to Chelsea called off

It has been reported that Omorodion will not be joining Chelsea after failing a medical. However, journalist Ben Jacobs has refuted that claim.

Rather, according to Jacobs, Omorodion’s transfer to the Blues has fallen through because of agent commissions.

Speaking on talkSPORT (12/08/2024 at 08:40), he said: “They do rate Samu very highly. There’s just been an issue at the last minute, some complications I think around the agent commissions.

“It’s not true, to my understanding, that any medical was failed. He did the first part in Paris and the second part in London, and at the moment anyway that deal is currently off.”

Frank Leboeuf was never convinced about Omorodion, so the Chelsea legend will not be too disappointed about this development.

Joao Felix will be a better signing than Samu Omorodion

While Felix and Omorodion do not play in the same position, the former is a much safer bet than the latter.

Felix is way more experienced than Omorodion and has already played in the Premier League before. With him, Chelsea fans will know what they are getting.

Enzo Maresca is already in possession of Cole Palmer and Christopher Nkunku, so it is not easy to see where exactly Felix fits in this Chelsea side.

Nevertheless, most Chelsea supporters are probably taking the Portugal international over Omorodion every day of the week.

Felix can also play on the left wing, so there is a possibility of him starting there. That would be bad news for Mykhailo Mudryk and Raheem Sterling, though neither player has probably done enough in a Chelsea shirt to warrant starting every game.

If Chelsea do bring Felix back to west London, it certainly will be interesting to see how Maresca utilises him. With Omorodion, things were a bit more straightforward, with the squad in need of another striker.
