What Cole Palmer was told before he left Man City for Chelsea now looks really silly

Cole Palmer left Manchester City for Chelsea last September in what has probably been one of the best career moves ever seen in the Premier League.

At City, Cole Palmer was a fringe player, not getting too many chances under Pep Guardiola.

However, at Chelsea, the attacking midfielder has quickly become a key figure and arguably the best footballer in the Premier League.

All of that has happened in just over a year, but things could have looked a lot different for Palmer if he had listened to some people around him.

Cole Palmer discusses Chelsea move

Chelsea signed Palmer from City for around £45m, which now looks like an absolute bargain.

Teammate Marc Cucurella recently described Palmer as “special”, which is a fair assessment. After all, he has already scored six goals and provided five assists in the Premier League this season.

If some had it their way, though, then Palmer may not be at Chelsea right now. The 22-year-old recently suggested that people told him not to move to Stamford Bridge.

Speaking to ITV about his Chelsea move, Palmer said: “Yeah, it was a gamble because I didn’t know what I was going into, I didn’t know the club I was going into. I had people telling me, don’t go here, don’t go there, but I just decided, what I wanted to do myself. And, you know, I did it.

“To move club, it changed my life. Just in many ways, you know, leaving Manchester, growing up, getting away from people that you didn’t need to be around. And obviously the football as well.”

Cole Palmer’s life-changing decision

In the end, Palmer’s decision to go with his gut and join Chelsea instead of listening to others has paid off.

Those who told him not to leave City for their Premier League rivals must now be feeling a bit silly. His growth at Chelsea never would have happened under Guardiola.

Of course, if the 53-year-old utilised him, Palmer has so much talent that he probably would have gone on to become a top player at City. However, Guardiola was never going to do that, given all of the other attacking options that he has.

It is why the England international had to leave the Premier League champions for Chelsea, a decision that has changed his life for the better.

Palmer can increase his credibility even more when Enzo Maresca‘s men travel to Anfield on Sunday to take on league leaders Liverpool.
