Marc Cucurella has just delivered a glowing verdict on one Chelsea teammate, but admitted that he doesn’t look like a footballer away from the pitch.

Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella has gone from zero to hero in the last year by rediscovering his best form and cementing his spot as the club’s first choice left-back.

At the age of 26, he’s remarkably one of the senior figures in such a young Blues squad. The Spain international now plays with the consistency that plenty of his teammates could learn from.

Speaking via talkSPORT this week, Darren Bent’s Premier League Team of the Season so far included Cucurella and one other Chelsea player.

Marc Cucurella amazed by Cole Palmer

During an interview with The Guardian, Cucurella has raved about the star quality of Chelsea attacker Cole Palmer.

He’s said that the 22-year-old Englishman doesn’t look like a natural footballer in every day life, but he produces magic when he’s actually playing.

Cucurella said: “If you see him not in his kit you would never in your life say he was a footballer, but then on the pitch … he shoots and it doesn’t seem like he is hitting it hard but he scores them all.

“He’s very different. I don’t know how to explain it: he’s special. We’re very lucky we have him. We’re lucky he didn’t play much in the Euros either because he came on and almost messed it up for us [scoring in the final].

“If he carries on like this, he’ll be among the best. There’s not much strength in the hair, but if that’s his only problem, then he’s all right.”

Even if Palmer doesn’t fit the profile of a footballer away from the pitch, when he’s on the pitch he’s one of the most gifted players we’ve seen at Chelsea in recent times.

The Chelsea talisman

There’s no doubt that Palmer is the outstanding individual in Chelsea’s group. Remarkably, the youngster dealt with the responsibility so well during his debut season at the club.

The left-footed playmaker has continued this campaign in similar vein, scoring six goals and creating five assists in seven Premier League games.

Fortunately, the likes of Christopher Nkunku, Nicolas Jackson and Noni Madueke have found their shooting boots as well to help ease the burden. It can’t just be on Palmer again in this 2024/25 season if the club wants to win trophies and get back into the top four.
