Reece James has posted some words of encouragement after teammate Wesley Fofana suffered a fresh injury concern yesterday in Chelsea’s behind closed doors friendly against Brentford.

The Athletic claimed that Fofana limped off the pitch on Tuesday with a suspected knee problem, which will worry supporters given he’s missed the last few months with a knee injury.

Graham Potter’s side won the friendly match against Brentford 5-1, according to various reports, but it may have come at a real cost.

Fofana has since taken to social media to issue an update on his injury scare. He appears to suggest he will return within a month.

The 22-year-old centre-back has been desperately unlucky with injuries since his move from Leicester City to Stamford Bridge in the summer, so the last thing he needs is another long layout.

Chelsea full-back James, 23, is in a similar boat of suffering injury problems this campaign.

He’s sent a heartfelt message directly to Fofana in the aftermath of yesterday’s news.

“The soul never dies. You gotta love your life, it’s gonna be hard at times, but I promise darkness turns to light, it’s gonna be alright. I’m with you brother,” James posted on his Instagram story (20th December).

If fit, James and Fofana should be two of the starting players in Chelsea’s defence, whether that’s in a back three or a back four.

Potter does have the kind of depth in his squad that most Premier League rivals would absolutely love, but it’s still going to make a huge impact when your top defenders are out at the same time.

It’s proven and universally agreed that James is one of the integral figures in the side. As for Fofana, he’s yet to properly have the opportunity to show how good he is as a modern centre-half.
