The England squad were left scrambling for a replay to see whether Conor Gallagher scored in a training game.

The midfielder was captured on the official Twitter page skipping past Jordan Pickford in goal, before his attempted finish was cleared by John Stones.

Gallagher was arguably one of the surprise inclusions of the squad when Gareth Southgate named his side to take on Italy and Ukraine this week.

He very rarely starts for Chelsea, although he is clearly admired by Graham Potter.

The manager nearly always makes him his first sub, replacing the likes of Joao Felix and Christian Pulisic to bring much-needed second half energy.

The former Crystal Palace loanee was originally one of four Blues who were selected to represent the Three Lions.

Both Reece James and Ben Chilwell will be pushing for starts at some point in this international break, after returns to both form and fitness for the duo.

Mason Mount was also originally part of the England squad, however his recent injury woes have seen him forced to pull out of the side.

While less likely than the wing-backs, Gallagher will certainly be hoping for some minutes in the next week after not featuring for Southgate’s side during the tournament in Qatar.

With him seeming to impress in training drills like the one captured, he is doing himself no harm in the manager’s thinking.

He will likely be competing with the likes of Jude Bellingham for game time, not long after the Borussia Dortmund man came up short against Chelsea.

Despite the Champions League defeat, rumours have continued to persist that the midfielder will be on the move to an elite side at the end of the season.

The Blues remain interested in that signing, although it does look likely he will move on to another side.
