Former Wales defender Sam Ricketts thinks this Chelsea team are really lacking something right now.
Chelsea lost another game earlier after being beaten 2-0 by Everton at Goodison Park.
Sam Ricketts was on commentary duty for BBC Radio 5 Live and was quick to highlight at full-time what he deems as a lack of leaders at Chelsea.
After losing so many of their experienced players and bringing in a bunch of young footballers, the Blues now have a very inexperienced team.
Before Chelsea’s latest defeat, Fabrizio Romano claimed that Mauricio Pochettino was still being backed by the club. It will be interesting to see if that remains the case after today.
Sam Ricketts on Chelsea’s lack of leaders
For Ricketts, one of Chelsea’s biggest problems right now is their lack of leaders.
Speaking about Pochettino‘s side on BBC Radio 5 Live after the game, he said: “The team that wanted to win the game more has gone on and won the game.
“With Chelsea, a lack of leaders, a lack of real desire to win the game.”
Are Chelsea lacking leaders?
They absolutely are. Again, this is such a young team. Thiago Silva is the only real commander in the squad and he was not even on the pitch today.
The problem is, it is not easy to find leaders. If it were, after spending £1bn on transfers, Chelsea probably would have bought multiple by now.
It is why their decision not to go all out for Declan Rice was surprising. The Arsenal man is still quite young at 24, but he already has so much experience and was captain of West Ham United before moving to the Emirates. Chelsea could really live to regret not signing the England international.
However, it is pretty clear that a lack of leaders is not the only issue at Chelsea right now. Signing Rice would not have fixed everything.
Where Chelsea go from here, it is quite easy to see. Until multiple things change, they are going to continue to drop down the league table.
