Jamie Carragher thinks Mauricio Pochettino made a brilliant tactical decision during Chelsea’s win over Tottenham last night.

Chelsea produced a surprise result on Monday night with a 4-1 thrashing away to Spurs.

It was a chaotic evening in North London, especially for a Spurs team that had two red cards and suffered some key injuries.

As for the Blues, they came from behind to pick up three crucial points in the Premier League. Cole Palmer equalised before a late Nicolas Jackson hat-trick finally broke down a resilient nine-man Spurs.

Tactical decision

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher really liked the decision from Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino to substitute Levi Colwill off the pitch at half-time.

The game was coming to the boil in the opening 45 minutes with tempers rising, this included Cristian Romero’s straight red card. Incidentally, Destiny Udogie was the Spurs player sent off early into the second period to give the visitors an even great numerical advantage.

Colwill was involved in a fiery encounter with Pape Matar Sarr on the stroke of half-time, with both players shown a yellow card by the referee.

“The decision to take Colwill off is a brilliant one from Pochettino,” Carragher told Sky Sports’ Main Event channel (9:10pm, 6 November).

“If Chelsea keep 11 players on the pitch they win the game.”

Speaking via Sky Sports in his post-match interview, Pochettino explained that he withdrew Colwill against Spurs because he lost his focus.

Happy return for Mauricio Pochettino

There was a lot made of Pochettino’s return to Spurs in the pre-match talk. This frantic game will be remembered for a lot more than just the Argentine’s return.

His team really needs to finetune their forward line despite netting four times this week. It could’ve been a lot more with sharper decision-making.

However, it’s a result that is a big step in the right direction. It means Spurs’ unbeaten league record is no more, too!
