Moises Caicedo was part of the Chelsea side that suffered a surprise defeat last night against Middlesbrough.

Chelsea have left themselves with lots of work to do in the Carabao Cup semi-finals after losing yesterday’s first leg 1-0 away to Championship club Boro.

It means Mauricio Pochettino’s side will need to overturn a one-goal deficit when the teams clash for the second leg on 23 January at Stamford Bridge.

Despite being strong favourites in Tuesday night’s match, the Blues showed the same kind of form that has haunted their season so far. The greatest example of that was missing several clear goalscoring opportunities.

Moises Caicedo started yet again for Chelsea in the heart of midfield.

The 22-year-old star was one of the brighter sparks on an evening when teammates around him crumbled, albeit he may have done a bit better tracking Boro goalscorer Hayden Hackney when he netted the winner.

He received a 7.11 match rating from WhoScored, the highest for the visitors at the Riverside Stadium. His performance included five tackles and one key pass.

Speaking via his podcast last month, John Obi Mikel insisted that Caicedo will come good in a Chelsea shirt if given time. We’e perhaps seeing flashes of that now.

Chelsea fans on Moises Caicedo

Chelsea supporters on social media were all saying that Caicedo is their only player to come out of the semi-final defeat with any credit in the bank.

Here are some Blues fans on X discussing the Ecuador midfielder’s cup performance:

One fan wrote: “Caicedo is the only one who came to play today.”

A second posted: “Don’t let that loss distract you from the fact that Caicedo was brilliant

A third said: “Caicedo only one that should be allowed on the bus after the game.”

One supporter added: “Caicedo is the only one that is keeping us in the tie.”

A fifth wrote: “Caicedo been good this second half. He seems like the only one to care.”

Another said: “Moises Caicedo is the only player that escapes today. Everybody else disgraceful.”

A seventh posted: “Caicedo doesn’t deserve to be here. Puts up class performances just to be let down by poor attackers.”
