Paul Merson calls Chelsea 23-year-old simply ‘the best about’ after his display against Manchester City

Paul Merson was left in awe of Chelsea’s Reece James during the crazy 4-4 draw against Manchester City.

Chelsea and Man City played out an eight-goal thriller this evening in a Premier League classic.

We’ve seen this season Mauricio Pochettino’s side play their best football against the top teams in the division, something that they did again on Sunday at Stamford Bridge.

It was 2-2 on the scoreboard at half-time after a wild opening 45 minutes, with goals from Erling Haaland, Thiago Silva, Raheem Sterling and Manuel Akanji.

Haaland put the visitors in front immediately after the restart before an equaliser from the in-form Nicolas Jackson, who’s now scored six league goals this season.

Rodri’s deflected strike looked like snatching the three points for Man City. However, Cole Palmer converted a spot-kick in stoppage time to rescue a deserved point.

Merse super impressed

Paul Merson singled out Chelsea captain Reece James during the first-half of Sunday’s game.

The 23-year-old right-back defended aggressively and smartly against Jeremy Doku. He assisted the Sterling goal with a great low cross, too.

Merson wrote on X: “Recce James is the best about, assist and [Jeremy] Doku in pocket.”

Reece James return huge

The return of James in the past few games has given this XI a noticeable lift.

Speaking via Mail Online this week, England manager Gareth Southgate suggested that James has taken a risk by ducking the England squad this month. The Blues skipper is being cautious after recently returning from his latest injury absence.

However, if he’s fit and firing, James is an absolute banker in our England squad for Euro 2024.

He brings so much to the Blues line-up both offensively and defensively, so keeping him fit is absolutely vital at Stamford Bridge.

We’re now starting to see a very strong XI at Chelsea emerge. Let’s hope that Pochettino can keep this up post-international break, when they return with a trip to Newcastle United.
