‘Struggled’… BBC pundit says £25m Chelsea player was really poor on the ball in Manchester United defeat

Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez endured a very busy evening in last night’s defeat against Manchester United.

Chelsea’s 2-1 Premier League loss at Old Trafford doesn’t really tell the fully story of Wednesday’s fixture.

Man United’s Scott McTominay starred by scoring a brace for the hosts, but they may have been disappointed not to score a flurry of goals. They had 28 shots in total and nine on target during a pretty dominant performance.

For Chelsea, it was yet another setback during what’s turning out to be a very frustrating campaign. Blues head coach Mauricio Pochettino just can’t seem to find any consistency with his team yet.

The visitors were fortunate that Robert Sanchez, 26, had a decent game in-between the sticks.

Sanchez stepped up for a poor Chelsea side with some great interventions in goal, which included a penalty save from Bruno Fernandes.

The £25million keeper (Sky Sports) did bail out his defence several times with huge saves.

However, BBC pundit Paul Robinson couldn’t help but highlight the glaring weakness in Sanchez’s game. He thinks that the Spanish gloveman was really poor with the ball at his feet versus Man United.

“Chelsea have grossly overplayed by playing it across their own box. Their goalkeeper has struggled with the ball at his feet tonight,” Robinson told BBC Radio 5 Live (10:15pm, 6 December).

Sanchez finished up with an 83 per cent pass completion yesterday (WhoScored), and he was nearly punished on a couple of occasions for his slack passing.

You don’t want to criticise one of Chelsea’s any good performers in midweek, who kept the scoreline down to a respectable score. However, this is not the first time that his ability to play out from the back has come under question.

TEAMtalk recently claimed that some football insiders doubt whether Sanchez can become a world-class goalkeeper.

There’s such an importance in this modern game for keepers to be good in possession, so we’re a little worried about his long-term position.
