Reece James was unable to play in Chelsea’s 5-0 win against Barrow on Tuesday night.

Reece James is still out injured, missing the third-round Carabao Cup tie as a result. However, the right-back was still at Stamford Bridge to support his team.

Malo Gusto had also been out injured, but he is fit again and was able to start on the right side of Chelsea‘s defence.

Amid the problems that Enzo Maresca is already having in the right-back position, it has been reported that Chelsea could make a move for Kiliann Sildillia in January.

Injured Reece James still doing his part

James would obviously love to be on the pitch right now. However, that is not a possibility, with Chelsea unwilling to rush the 24-year-old back and risk him picking up another injury.

James is still trying to remain in the picture and spread some positivity around Stamford Bridge, though.

After Chelsea’s victory over Barrow, the Englishman was spotted in the tunnel greeting every single Chelsea player.

According to football.london journalist Bobby Vincent, James greeted all of his teammates with high-fives, while some even got a hug from their captain.

They will be hoping to have him back soon, but Maresca has admitted he’s not sure when James will return.

Could Reece James lose the Chelsea captaincy?

James was named as Chelsea captain by Mauricio Pochettino. Maresca opted against making a change following his arrival at the club, so it seems unlikely that he will do it now.

However, Chelsea fans may have to get used to seeing Enzo Fernandez with the captain’s armband.

The midfielder has been skipper in James’ absence and being a signing who cost more than £100m, he is always going to play.

The same cannot be said about James, though, who continues to pick up injuries, so while he may not lose the armband officially, Fernandez is the on-field leader right now.

Fernandez could be joined by Argentina teammate Exequiel Palacios at Chelsea, with it being claimed that the Blues are interested in the Bayer Leverkusen star.
