Chelsea’s first-team star has insisted that he’s not one of the “top players” at Stamford Bridge and is much more of a team player.

There’s a number of individuals in the Chelsea squad that have started this season in good form. It’s a credit to Enzo Maresca that things have clicked so quickly under him as the Blues manager.

Graeme Bailey has exclusively revealed to The Chelsea Chronicle that Chelsea’s hierarchy are delighted with the start under Maresca. Hopefully, the Italian head coach can keep up the good work after this October international break, when his side will resume fourth in the Premier League table.

Marc Cucurella doesn’t consider himself a top player at Chelsea

Marc Cucurella, who’s started every league game so far this season, doesn’t rate himself as one of the star names in the Chelsea group. We suspect that many supporters may disagree with the 26-year-old left-back, though.

Speaking via Football.London last month, Maresca hailed Cucurella as “very important” and someone who makes others around him better.

Chelsea defender Cucurella has now been asked by COPE about Maresca’s comments that he makes his teammates better and has a big influence in the Blues changing room.

He’s answered: “His explanation is very accurate because nowadays statistics are calculated a lot and I am not one of the top players. I am a team player, I help my teammates, I make the team work, I give that extra if the team is asleep and I give intensity that infects my teammates. He explained it quite well.”

The rise of Marc Cucurella

Cucurella, now into his third season at Stamford Bridge, hasn’t had it all his own way since leaving Brighton to join Chelsea. In fact, the Spain international had plenty of criticism in his first year for the level of his performances.

Now, the £175,000-a-week full-back (Spotrac) has developed into one of the most consistent performers in the Blues squad.

While the likes of Cole Palmer and Enzo Fernandez are the star names at the club, every supporter will know the value that Cucurella is bringing with his consistency and aggression on the pitch.
