£25m Chelsea player is now close to returning from injury, he may be back at the start of January

Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez is edging closer to making his return from injury.

Robert Sanchez, 26, suffered a knee problem earlier in December.

The £25million keeper (BBC) has since missed the last four games across all competitions, with Djordje Petrovic stepping in as a quality back-up option.

Now, there’s suggestions that Sanchez’s return to fitness may be imminent.

Football.London has claimed that Sanchez is ‘nearing his return to action’ after his recent injury absence.

It is explained that the Spanish gloveman may be back in Chelsea’s squad at the beginning of January.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side are in Premier League action this weekend away to Luton Town for their final game of 2023. Afterwards, the Blues kick off next month with an FA Cup tie on 6 January at home to Championship club Preston.

It’s great news to hear that Sanchez is close to a return, but will he instantly resume as the club’s first-choice keeper? The club play plenty of cup games in January and it should allow for some rotation, but the fans will be keen to know if the undisputed number one has changed in the last month.

We’re struggling to split Sanchez and Petrovic when you look at how both have performed so far this season at Stamford Bridge.

TEAMtalk previously claimed that some insiders within the game doubt whether Sanchez can develop into a world-class goalkeeper. In fairness, his ability with the ball at his feet does worry us, while Petrovic feels a bit safer in that regard.

We’ve seen over the years that all the top teams consist of a top-class keeper in net, so perhaps this is an area of the pitch that the club still needs to invest in further down the line.
