The midfielder was strongly linked with a move to Chelsea in the final days of the transfer window this summer. The news came as a result of Thomas Tuchel not being content with his options in the middle of the park for this season.
Alvarez even missed Ajax training on the final day of the transfer window in order to try and force through a move to Stamford Bridge.
Instead, the Blues pursued a deadline day loan move for Denis Zakaria.
Despite impressing in his long-awaited debut for the club, he has hardly featured for the Blues under Graham Potter.

This has had an effect on his international career, with him yet to make an appearance for the Switzerland side at the World Cup.
It is expected that Chelsea will be back in for Alvarez in a future transfer window, especially given the potential midfield exodus they have on their hands.
Both N’golo Kante and Jorginho have deals expiring at the end of the season, and there are currently no signs that they will extend their stays at Stamford Bridge.
