Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher is said to be surprised with one decision Mauricio Pochettino has made this season.

Mauricio Pochettino made Reece James captain and Ben Chilwell vice-captain in the summer, but both players have missed games in the current campaign and are sidelined at the moment.

As a result, Conor Gallagher has had to stand in for the two, and one club source has now told The Sun that the 23-year-old is surprised his manager has made him captain in James and Chilwell’s absence.

It shows that Gallagher has really turned his Chelsea career around.

The Englishman was heavily linked with a move away from Stamford Bride during the last transfer window, with talkSPORT claiming back then that the club would have sold him for £50m.

Mauricio Pochettino has made a mess of the captaincy situation

Chelsea obviously needed a new captain after Cesar Azpilicueta departed the club in the summer.

Thiago Silva was the logical choice. The Brazilian has a wealth of experience and was the skipper of Paris Saint-Germain during his time in France.

In the end, though, Pochettino decided to hand James the honour, which has sort of backfired. James is missing games because of injury, has been sent off and was also disciplined by the FA after an incident in Chelsea’s 1-0 loss to Aston Villa in September — a fixture he did not even play in.

The captaincy may have come a bit too soon for the England international and even if he did not, his injury record means he is still not the best choice.

It has left Gallagher having to fill in, with Stuart Pearce believing that it is also too early for him.

Honestly, it is quite a surprise that Silva did not take over from Azpilicueta after the Spaniard left the club, but Pochettino will have his reasons.
