Journalist Sami Mokbel has claimed that Chelsea youngster Levi Colwill is set to play a massive role in Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

He told ‘The Byline’ that the new manager sees the 20-year-old as a player who can be crucial to the club for the next decade.

There has been a lot of talk over whether Colwill will be part of the Chelsea side going into a new era next season.

He is wanted badly by Brighton, who enjoyed his services on loan last season and are now prepared to break their transfer record in order to bring him in permanently.

However, it has been repeatedly claimed that the club see him as untouchable at this moment of time, and will not be entertaining offers.

Colwill to be crucial for Pochettino

It looks as if the player’s decision will come down to the guarantees offered to him by the club for the upcoming season, with Mokbel stating that he will not be making his choice based on financial reasons.

He said: “Massively. Absolutely massively. I think Pochettino looks at Colwill and thinks ‘he’d be our bedrock for the next decade’. I’m 85% sure that this will all end in Levi Colwill signing a contract and becoming such a massive part of the defence that Pochettino builds, but it needs to happen.

“He needs to see the proof in that. He will need to see for himself whether he is playing regularly. This will not be a financial decision; he wants to play.”

Even with the impressive Benoit Badiashile in their ranks, it would be simply foolish for the club to look to cash in on Colwill this summer.

He is currently showing his talents at the U21 Euros, with England yet to concede a goal with him at the back.
