Rio Ferdinand has given a glowing assessment of Chelsea’s Mason Mount as a player.

Mount, 23, is having a strong individual season at club level.

The attacking midfielder’s scored 10 goals and made 13 assists in 44 Blues appearances so far this campaign across all competitions.

His weekend display in Chelsea’s 6-0 league win at Southampton was a reminder of how dangerous he can be in attack, scoring twice and superbly setting up the opener.

However, there’s big pressure on him, along with his teammates, to produce their very best tonight. Thomas Tuchel’s side are preparing for the huge second leg showdown with Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter-finals, which they currently trail 3-1 on aggregate.

Ferdinand waxed lyrical about Chelsea talisman Mount when his name came up in discussion:

“Mount is a mad player. On and off the ball, that’s what I love about him. He gives you both sides of the game,” Ferdinand said.

“Young players watching the game, if you watch Mount, he’s efficient with it, and he can bang, but it’s the work ethic and the positions he takes up defensively. That’s why he’ll always play for England because I think you can rely on him.”

Mount’s coming up trumps this season for Chelsea in an attacking sense, especially in the Premier League. In fact, him and Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah are the only players to both score and assist in a single league match this season on five different occasions.

The England star has 23 goals and assists combined this season, more than any Chelsea teammate.

Kai Havertz, 13 goals and three assists, is his closest competitor.

You sense the aforementioned duo will be crucial tonight if the Blues are to pull off a stunning comeback against Madrid.
