Jamie Carragher has raved about the quality of Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong, who’s been linked as a Chelsea transfer target this summer.

It’s been claimed Spanish giants Barcelona have privately informed Chelsea of the opportunity to sign De Jong in this window. The Blues are interested in the 25-year-old Dutch star, but he’s not a priority target at this stage for them.

In addition, it’s been reported the Barca man would be more open to joining Chelsea than rival suitors Manchester United.

De Jong, who earns £164,000-a-week, is a talented central midfielder that made his name at Ajax before a transfer to the Camp Nou.

It’ll be very interesting to see if the Holland international wants to test himself in the Premier League.

Carragher on De Jong

Sky Sports pundit Carragher has been discussing the future of Barcelona’s midfielder, particularly his transfer links to Old Trafford.

He’s a big admirer of a player he thinks would be great addition at Man United:

“It’ll be interesting if they (Manchester United) get De Jong,” Carragher told Sky Sports News.

“I do think he’s a top-class player and I think he would make a huge difference for them.”

Sort other areas first

The midfield positions are the one area in the Chelsea squad right now that looks exceptionally strong, so it’s no surprise De Jong is not an essential target.

There’s question marks in attack about where the goals will come from, albeit the signing of Raheem Sterling from Manchester City is an excellent one.

Meanwhile, there’s still work that needs doing in the centre-back department despite Kalidou Koulibaly’s arrival.

It might be worth looking at cover for the wing-backs, too.
