Pundit Paul Merson has claimed that he believes Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher has the chance to make himself extremely popular with supporters at Stamford Bridge.

He told Sky Sports that rejecting a bid from rivals Tottenham will make him somewhat of a fan favourite in West London.

Gallagher is one of the Chelsea players whose future remains up in the air as the transfer window approaches its final few hours.

Spurs are reportedly very keen on bringing him in, as they look to bolster their squad in the final moments of the summer window.

Chance for Gallagher to become Chelsea hero

The midfielder has seemingly been up for sale for the right price all summer, even though talks have been that Mauricio Pochettino has been a big fan of him.

He has started every game this season for the club, including captaining them in midweek against AFC Wimbledon.

Merson has claimed that Gallagher has the chance to register himself as a legend among Chelsea fans if he chooses to reject a move across London.

He said: “If Tottenham come in and Conor Gallagher turns them down, he will be a hero with the Chelsea fans. An absolute hero.”

It would be a terrible move for the Blues at this stage of the window to allow someone who has been so key this season to leave to a rival now.
