Journalist Matt Law has claimed that Chelsea staff are ‘absolutely insistent’ that the club are going to use Levi Colwill in the first team next season.

He told the ‘London is Blue’ podcast that despite some sides thinking they may be able to sign the 20-year-old, he will be a key member of the first team next season.

It has been a sensational season for Colwill on loan this season, with his growth a staple of the brilliant campaign Brighton have enjoyed this year.

They have almost certainly secured European football for next season, and caused quite the stir with their 3-0 victory away at Arsenal last weekend.

Colwill will stay at Chelsea

There were questions though over whether the Englishman would ever get his opportunity to excel in the first team at Stamford Bridge, especially given the strength in depth the position.

Wesley Fofana, Benoit Badiashile and Kalidou Koulibaly are all expected to be members of Mauricio Pochettino’s side next season.

However, Law has claimed that the Blues are adamant that Colwill will be part of their squad for next season.

He said: “Pochettino does occasionally switch from a back four to a back five but he’s more of a back four kind of guy. The club are adamant that Levi Colwill is coming back and being part of the squad. I know some people are a little bit disbelieving of that and think there may be some room for manoeuvre, but the club are absolutely insistent.”

With Pochettino reportedly also ready to give the defender a chance when he takes over for next season, it looks set that Chelsea will have the services of one of the most promising defenders in world football for free.
