‘Actually’… Paul Merson says he thinks Chelsea’s two best players cost them nothing

Chelsea’s two best players right now cost them nothing because they’re actually from the academy.

That is according to Paul Merson.

The Sky Sports pundit claims that Conor Gallagher and Levi Colwill are currently the standout duo at Stamford Bridge.

We think he’s missing out obvious names such as Cole Palmer, Enzo Fernandez and Malo Gusto this season, who all cost a sizeable amount of money to buy.

However, we agree that academy graduates Gallagher and Colwill belong in the conversation at the top of the table.

It’s proof that there’s still a lot of homegrown talent coming out of Cobham. Incidentally, we’d rank club captain and poster boy Reece James as the squad’s best player right now if he could stay fit.

Merson has emphasised the mistakes made by Chelsea when spending in the transfer market by highlighting Gallagher and Colwill.

Merson told Sky Sports: “He (Jurgen Klopp) believes in those players, but a new manager will come in and he may not trust them. How many managers do you see give chances to kids? Not many. You see it at Chelsea. They don’t trust their young players. They have gone out and spent £1bn on players when their best players are actually from the academy in Conor Gallagher and Levi Colwill.”

We feel like Colwill, who turned 21 earlier this week, has so much to give Chelsea in the years ahead.

The left-footed centre-back can grow into one of the top defenders around with the right path.

As for Gallagher, the box-to-box midfielder ticks all the boxes as a player.

CaughtOffside recently claimed that Chelsea’s owners are considering offering Gallagher a new contract. In our view, the club simply must secure his future!

If you’ve seen any of Chelses’s Under-21s side this year, you’ll know the conveyer belt of talent continues.
