Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez and Argentina kicked off their World Cup defence against Algeria in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Fernandez started the game and managed to help his country win 3-0, but it was Lionel Messi who was the star of the show.

The Inter Miami man and Barcelona legend scored a hat-trick, sending Argentina to the top of Group J. Unsurprisingly, Messi was handed a 10 by different Argentine outlets for his world-class display, but what about Fernandez?

Argentine newspaper La Voz gave the Chelsea man a 6/10, stating: “Although he did not manage to have the same impact as he so often does, he combined well with his midfield teammates and tried to integrate himself into the game as often as possible.”

Canal 26 were a bit more generous, handing Fernandez a 7.5. Overall, it was quite a steady performance from Fernandez.

The 25-year-old did not do anything spectacular, but his display was not a bad one. After a bit of rest, Fernandez and Argentina will begin preparation for their next game against Austria.

Chelsea should keep Enzo Fernandez after World Cup

Fernandez will be aiming to impress at this year’s World Cup as he looks to secure a move away from Stamford Bridge.

Fernandez is thought to be keen on joining Real Madrid this summer and has been unhappy at Chelsea since Enzo Maresca’s departure in January. However, the Blues should try to keep hold of the Argentina international after the end of the tournament.

He is one of the best players in the Premier League. Not too many midfielders can do what he does. Fernandez scores goals and is capable of playing amazing passes.

It will not be easy to replace him, so the former Benfica man is someone Xabi Alonso is going to want to keep hold of. He still has a contract until 2032, which is good news for Chelsea. Really, they should not be getting bullied by Fernandez or Real Madrid, and hopefully that is not something that happens between now and the end of the transfer window.
