BBC pundit explains what Chelsea just couldn’t do against Brentford on Saturday

Pundit Garth Crooks has criticised Chelsea’s lack of ability to put the ball in the back of the net off the back of their last game.

He told BBC Sport that this has therefore led to a big loss of momentum after they had actually strung some impressive results together.

A home fixture against Brentford is one that presented a great opportunity for the Blues to put more points on the board after being unbeaten in their prior four fixtures.

The great display in the 2-2 draw against Arsenal was a thing of the past though, as they limped to a 2-0 defeat in a game that brought back chilling reminders of last season.

A lot of possession and chances created, particularly from Cole Palmer, did not help them find the net.

Mauricio Pochettino elected to start Nicolas Jackson up front despite not playing him during the draw against Arsenal. This saw him move away from the system that had impressed so much against the Gunners.

Crooks on Chelsea’s finishing

It’s fair to say Jackson did not impress everyone at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

A fan could be heard shouting at the Senegal international, to which he couldn’t help but respond to.

Crooks has now claimed it was Chelsea’s finishing that saw them fall short in the west London derby.

He said: “Chelsea, meanwhile, couldn’t hit a barn door and lost any momentum they may have gained after their recent displays away at Fulham and Burnley.”

It remains to be seen if Pochettino chooses to return back to the false nine way of playing for the next Premier League game against leaders Tottenham.

Before then, he has the EFL Cup fixture against Blackburn to worry about on Wednesday night.
