Chelsea vice-captain Ben Chilwell has now shared what he told teammate Thiago Silva straight after the Blues secured their place in the EFL Cup final.
He told the Mail Online that he looked to share the message that the duo in particular had unfinished business when it came to cup finals played at Wembley stadium.
Chilwell made his first start since September earlier this week in what was clearly the club’s biggest game of the season so far.
Tasked with overturning a first leg deficit against Middlesbrough, they put in probably their best display of the campaign too as they picked up a 6-1 win.
The England international instantly showed what the Blues had been missing in his position, with his attacking threat clear to see.
With Mauricio Pochettino preparing to face Liverpool in the final, the players who have been at the club for a while will have recent memories of facing that side in finals.
What Chilwell said to Silva
He claimed that a conversation with fellow defender Silva was enough to raise motivation for the big game next month.
He said: “It’s three finals we’ve lost [two FA Cups and one Carabao Cup] so 100 per cent there is unfinished business. I was, literally, five minutes ago talking to Thiago [Silva] in the shower and saying how we’ve got unfinished business at Wembley.
“We want to go and win and, as a group, we need to make sure that we go and really enjoy the experience and soak it in. That’s equally important because there’s only a few of us who have won a trophy at Chelsea and it’s a club that demands trophies.”
Victory in the final would be a huge moment for a young group who have been under a lot of pressure to perform since Todd Boehly took over as owner. It would also be the first trophy in England for Pochettino to add to his CV.
