Ben Chilwell left Chelsea on a temporary basis to join Crystal Palace on deadline day of the winter transfer window.
It’s been a frustrating first half of the season for Ben Chilwell, playing only once for Chelsea because he’s not fancied by Enzo Maresca.
Thankfully, the 28-year-old left-back secured a move to Premier League rivals Palace on loan for the rest of the season.
Joe Cole and Michael Owen agree on Chilwell’s loan to Palace that it’s a transfer which suits all parties. The most important thing for the defender is that he gets back to playing regular football again, but he will face strong competition from Palace wing-back Tyrick Mitchell.

Ben Chilwell reacts on Instagram to Chelsea exit, Jude Bellingham responds
Chilwell has uploaded his first social media post since completing his move to Palace for the rest of the 2024/25 campaign with a message on Instagram.
He’s received several responses in the comment section, including from Real Madrid and England star Jude Bellingham, plus Blues defender Trevoh Chalobah.

Everton boss David Moyes was interested in Chelsea’s Chilwell in January before he made the move across London to Selhurst Park.
We think that he’s ended up at the right club because he’ll suit the role of a left wing-back in the 3-4-2-1 system that Palace manager Oliver Glasner prefers using. Blues supporters will fondly remember that he played some of his best football for them as a wing-back that got up and down the pitch with incredible energy.
Can Ben Chilwell get back in England squad?
Chilwell, who’s got 21 senior England caps, hasn’t received a call-up for the national team since March 2024. It’ll be interesting to see if this Palace loan can help springboard him back into the international fold.
It’s been claimed that England manager Thomas Tuchel has told Chilwell he’s in his plans despite his exile at Chelsea this season.
In fairness, the left-back spot has been a problem position for England for many years, especially because of Luke Shaw’s injury problem.
Here is a look at some of the English left-backs available to Three Lions boss Tuchel:
- Tyrick Mitchell (Crystal Palace)
- Lewis Hall (Newcastle United)
- Leif Davis (Ipswich Town)
- Luke Shaw (Manchester United)
- Ben Chilwell (Chelsea on loan at Crystal Palace)
If Chilwell can start performing again, we wouldn’t be surprised to see him back in contention for England.
