Ben Foster was left really impressed by the Chelsea debut from Enzo Fernandez last week.

Fernandez, 22, had all eyes on him last Friday when he started for the Blues in the goalless draw against Fulham in the Premier League.

The Argentine midfielder was thrown straight into the starting line-up by Graham Potter just days after his record-breaking £106.8million arrival from Benfica.

Described as “fantastic” by Potter after his debut, Fernandez made an eye-catching start with an industrious performance in a defensive midfield role.

Enzo Fernandez qualities

Fernandez showed a snippet last week of why Chelsea have gone all out on his signature.

In particular, Ben Foster thinks the 22-year-old’s passing range stood out as a massive positive against Fulham.

“Fernandez, he looked lovely. It’s an awful lot of money. I like seeing a young player like Fernandez at that age playing defensive midfield. He drops in and gets the ball off the centre-backs. His range of passing was lovely,” Foster said on his YouTube channel.

Let’s hope Fernandez can bring a similar kind of intent and creativity to his passing as former Chelsea maestro Cesc Fabregas.

There’s been so much to love about the Blues midfield in recent years with the likes of N’Golo Kante, Mateo Kovacic and Jorginho. They’ve lacked creativity and a cutting edge in attack at times, though.

In our view, Fernandez looks like a younger and fresher version of Jorginho that can add some extra star quality on the pitch.

With the kind of creativity and speed that now exists in Chelsea’s frontline, Blues midfielders need to get their heads up quickly and provide rapid service of the ball. The early signs are Fernandez ticks the boxes to do just that.
