‘Big influence’: Kai Havertz says he spoke to Chelsea legend before he joined, it convinced him

Kai Havertz has shared that Petr Cech was one of the key individuals who convinced him to join Chelsea.

Kai Havertz, who joined the Blues for £71million (BBC) from Bayer Leverkusen back in 2020, has had plenty of ups and downs so far at Stamford Bridge.

The 23-year-old attacker is going through a purple patch of form right now. Graham Potter recently described it as an “absolute dream” working with Havertz. Of course, he scored the famous winning goal in a Champions League final, too.

However, the critics will point towards the fact he doesn’t contribute enough, scoring 32 goals in 128 Chelsea appearances.

When discussing his move to Chelsea, Havertz has told the club’s official YouTube account that Cech played a major role in initial transfer conversations.

“I think the first meeting I had with people from Chelsea was with Petr Cech. He had a big influence that I came here,” Havertz said.

Cech, who is undeniably a club legend, worked as the Technical and Performance Advisor under the previous ownership. He did leave that post last June, though.

There is now a new structure of staff in place involved in all incomings at the Bridge.

There is a temptation to really love Havertz as a player, especially because of his heroics in the Champions League.

The left-footed forward is technically superb and works so hard off the ball. It’s no coincidence Gianfranco Zola has said he would have loved to play alongside Havertz.

He has to be far more consistent to warrant a spot in the starting XI for the long-term plans, though.

These next few months from now until the end of the season should play a big role in his Chelsea future.
