‘Big problem’: Chris Sutton shares something worrying he’s noticed about Chelsea’s attackers in recent matches

Chris Sutton says Graham Potter should be concerned by the apparent lack of chemistry amongst his Chelsea forwards.

Addressing the issue on the BBC Monday Night Club, Sutton spoke rather solemnly about the absence of cohesion within Potter’s front line.

There has been very little sense of unity across the entire Chelsea squad in the past few games, but especially in attack.

Lack of chemistry at Chelsea

No matter which combination is called out, none seem to be able to blend together efficiently.

Potter’s repeated rotation of the side certainly isn’t helping this problem.

In the last three Premier League matches – all defeats – the Blues boss has tried three different offensive arrangements.

Against Brighton & Hove Albion, he deployed Kai Havertz through the middle, with Mason Mount and Conor Gallagher the advanced midfielders behind him.

He tried this formula again away to Newcastle United, but exchanged Havertz for Armando Broja.

It was a changed group for the 1-0 loss at home to Arsenal.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang lead the line against his former club, whilst Mount, Havertz and Raheem Sterling played as the trio behind.

Between all these variations, Chelsea managed just one goal.

Nothing seems to be working for Potter in an attacking sense, a concern that Sutton urged to be fixed.

“He’s trying to find his best 11 and best formation and that’s the issue at this moment in time. It hasn’t clicked, especially in forward areas,” said the ex-Chelsea striker.

“You don’t really see any combination play or players linking up. It’s a big problem for Graham Potter.”

What is Chelsea’s best attack?

It’s really difficult to name Potter’s best front three or four, depending on formation.

Aubameyang and Broja are the only real recognised number nines, so it would make sense to fit them in somewhere.

Pinning Havertz down to one position is both a blessing and a curse, as it’s a struggle to suitably slot the German in for a sustained period.

Then there’s the peripheral figures of Hakim Ziyech and Christian Pulisic, who possess great talent but have not yet been trusted by Potter.

Potentially adding Christopher Nkunku to the mix in January will only muddy the waters further.
