Chelsea believe that Robert Sanchez has the potential to become one of the world’s very best goalkeepers in the future.
That is according to a report from The Athletic.
Robert Sanchez spent the second half of last season frustrated sitting on Brighton’s bench, which resulted in him completing a £25millon transfer (BBC) to Stamford Bridge in the summer window.
Now, the 25-year-old’s the first-choice keeper at Chelsea and under increased pressure.
The Spanish shot-stopper has produced some excellent moments in between the sticks during the opening months of his Blues career, but a couple of sloppy errors on the ball have been magnified at a club this size.

Huge Chelsea belief
The Athletic has reported on Wednesday that Chelsea are not actively looking to replace Sanchez in goal. In fact, he’s got huge backing from within club.
It is understood that Ben Roberts, who’s the global head of goalkeeping at Stamford Bridge, is a big fan of Sanchez. It’s no great surprise after he previously coached the Spaniard at Brighton, though.
The report says that there’s a belief at Chelsea that Sanchez already has the tools to grow into one of the best goalkeepers in the sport over time.
We’re going to need a little bit more convincing before we can agree with this theory, but it should give the player himself such huge confidence in his own game.
Robert Sanchez opportunity
The chance to nail down Chelsea’s starting position is one Sanchez needs to firmly grab with both hands.
Mauricio Pochettino is putting faith in him as the No 1 goalkeeper right now, so he needs to repay the manager’s big trust with consistent performances in net.
We’re definitely looking at his distribution and general play with the ball at his feet as a worrying area to brush up on.
Speaking via talkSPORT this week (8:39am, 24 October), Andy Townsend criticised the “stupid” mistake from Sanchez in the weekend’s draw against Arsenal. The Chelsea keeper’s poor pass gifted Arsenal a goal and route back into the Premier League match, which eventually finished 2-2.
A few errors means the entire Chelsea fanbase is keeping a very close eye on his displays in the upcoming games. Hopefully, he tightens up his passing game because as a presence he looks colossal in the goal.
