Chelsea fans worried about Marc Guiu links with Sunderland, use Andrey Santos example

The latest transfer speculation indicates that Chelsea youngster Marc Guiu could end up leaving on loan to join Sunderland. However, Blues supporters aren’t sold on the idea for one main reason.

While Marc Guiu, 19, showed glimpses of quality during his debut year with the Blues last season, it’s quite obvious that he needs to go elsewhere to play more regularly and develop.

Chelsea want Guiu to leave on loan, preferably to an English club. Reports on Wednesday suggested that the Spanish striker is on Sunderland’s radar, who are showing huge ambition in the transfer market as they prepare for their return to the Premier League.

Sunderland have approached Chelsea about Guiu and are now in discussions about a summer deal.

Chelsea fans fear Marc Guiu could fall into Andrey Santos trap

According to Chelsea supporters on social media, Guiu to Sunderland could be a transfer that is destined to fail. Instead, they would much rather see the young centre-forward go somewhere else on loan because they are worried about a lack of opportunities at the Stadium.

Here are Blues fans on X claiming that Guiu could struggle for minutes at Sunderland, which would be a repeat of what happened to Andrey Santos at Nottingham Forest during the 2023/24 season.

One fan wrote: “Hope they’ll not do to him what Nottingham forest did to Andrey Santos.”

“Guiu will not play any significant minutes at Sunderland. This is Andrey Santos to Forest all over again,” another posted.

One supporter commented: “I don’t know about this. It’s giving shades of Andrey Santos at Forest or Lesley Ugochukwu at Southampton. I would rather he go on loan to Ipswich.”

“This smells a Santos/Forest loan. Sunderland are not ready to give Guiu minutes in Premier League ahead of experienced strikers,” another said.

At the start of the 2023/24 campaign, Chelsea sent Brazilian midfielder Santos on loan to Premier League rivals Forest on a season-long loan. Unfortunately, the South American youngster made just two Forest appearances before his loan deal was cut short halfway through the season.

The good news is that Santos spent the next 18 months on loan with Strasbourg in France, where he played regularly and developed immensely. In fact, the 21-year-old talent is now with Chelsea’s first team ahead of the 2025/26 season.

After plenty of ups and downs out on loan, Santos is firmly in Enzo Maresca’s plans at Chelsea.

Marc Guiu’s competition if he joins Sunderland

Of course, Chelsea need Guiu to get regular first-team minutes if he goes somewhere else this summer. Would that happen in Sunderland colours, though?

At the moment, the Black Cats have Wilson Isidor and Eliezer Mayenda as their main options in the striker position. Incidentally, both helped them secure promotion from the Championship last season, with Mayenda even scoring in the play-off final victory against Sheffield United.

In fairness, we’re confident that Guiu could force his way into Sunderland’s best XI with his quality and potential. It is a logical concern about a lack of playing time, though, because it’s easier for clubs to sideline players who are only with them on loan.
