Sunderland were unsuccessful in the transfer race to sign Djordje Petrovic from Chelsea this summer, but they are now plotting another raid on Stamford Bridge.
Sunderland are making some serious moves in the transfer window as they prepare for their return to the Premier League in the new season, and Djordje Petrovic, 25, was recently linked with a move to the Stadium of Light.
Reports in July claimed that Sunderland were ‘close’ to signing Petrovic on a five-year deal from Chelsea. Instead, the Serbian goalkeeper snubbed Sunderland to complete a move to Premier League rivals Bournemouth.
Chelsea fans were left gutted by Petrovic’s exit because many wanted the gloveman to stay, especially after a superb loan spell at Strasbourg last season.

Sunderland begin discussions with Chelsea for Marc Guiu
On Wednesday afternoon, Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie reported via X that Sunderland are now in talks with Chelsea over the potential transfer of Marc Guiu.
It is explained that the Blues have made their 19-year-old forward available on loan. As a result, Sunderland have stepped up their interest with an approach for the teenage talent.
Earlier in the window, Chelsea rejected offers to sell Guiu, and they would like to send him out on loan to an English club. It now looks like that could become a real possibility as Sunderland try to negotiate a deal.
Championship outfit Swansea City are out of the running to sign Guiu, but Sunderland can offer a season of top-flight football for the Blues youngster.

Marc Guiu would be a great fit for Sunderland
On paper, Guiu to Sunderland on loan could be a superb bit of business from Chelsea.
The Spanish frontman looked a handful when he played for the Blues last season, scoring six goals in 16 appearances across all competitions, but he needs regular minutes for his development. It could be even tougher to get game time if he stays because of new signings Joao Pedro and Liam Delap.
As for Sunderland, they are clearly throwing everything at it to stay in the top division after winning the Championship play-offs last season. Here is a look at their impressive signings already in the 2025 summer window…
- Habib Diarra
- Enzo Le Fee
- Chemsdine Talbi
- Simon Adingra
- Noah Sadiki
- Reinildo Mandava
- Granit Xhaka
If Sunderland add an exciting prospect like Guiu to the mix as well, they look like a side that could compete and perhaps stay in the division.
