Chelsea’s latest win over Tottenham was absolutely crucial for so many reasons.

First and foremost, Chelsea moved back up to fourth in the Premier League table after a 1-0 victory at home to Spurs on Thursday night.

The Blues are in a hugely competitive race for Champions League qualification, so it’s absolutely vital they keep their destiny in their hands.

On top of that, Enzo Maresca’s side retained the bragging rights over their London rivals. Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou has a horrid record against Chelsea, now losing four out of four since he arrived in England.

In particular, the Blues have enjoyed playing their London neighbours during the 21st century. Chelsea’s win over Spurs this week means they’ve now won the previous four meetings in a row.

It may surprise some fans to hear that Chelsea have completed a league double over Spurs in back-to-back seasons for the first time since doing so in three consecutive Premier League campaigns between 1999-00 and 2001-02 (BBC Sport).

Not a single Chelsea manager during Roman Abramovich’s era as the owner achieved the feat of back-to-back league doubles over Spurs. Well, Maresca and Mauricio Pochettino have combined across the previous two seasons to do just that.

Thiago Silva celebrated Chelsea beating Spurs, which is such an important fixture for the fanbase.

Now, they have eight league games remaining to try wrap up Champions League qualification.

Enzo Fernandez has tormented Tottenham this season

In both of Chelsea’s wins over Spurs this campaign, Enzo Fernandez has been at the heart of the success.

Back in December 2024, the 24-year-old Argentine midfielder scored during the dramatic 4-3 away win at Spurs. He then followed that up on Thursday with the match-winning goal in the 1-0 home victory.

Tim Sherwood’s message to Chelsea is to make sure they build the team around Fernandez moving forward.

Even though the central midfielder struggled in the early spell of his Blues career, he’s now performing so consistently and adding important goals to his game.
