Chelsea have spoken about giving ‘influential’ player new contract, but he’s likely to leave

Chelsea have reportedly been in conversation over offering one player a new contract this summer to stay at the club.

It has been clear that ever since Todd Boehly took over as owner that he is not willing to allow players to run down their contracts at Stamford Bridge.

He will no doubt be looking to avoid the situation that played out with Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen when he joined the club, with them both moving on free transfers.

The situation surrounding Conor Gallagher at the minute looks as if it could be heading that way. He has less than a year remaining on his current deal.

The England international has shown no desire up to now to leave the club, with him filling the role of captain for a large amount of last season.

Chelsea have spoken about new Conor Gallagher contract

According to BBC Sport, the Blues have actually been in talks this summer over handing him a new contract.

The story goes on to say though that it is not clear yet though whether the terms Chelsea would be prepared to offer the midfielder would be enough for him to accept.

Recent reports have actually claimed that Atletico Madrid are close to agreeing a fee to sign Gallagher.

There is no doubt a desire for Chelsea to not sell him to a direct Premier League rival if he does move on, and therefore a sale to Spain could be desirable.

All of this transfer talk is despite the fact that he played an important role in what the Blues did last season. Joe Cole described him as ‘influential’.

Romeo Lavia hoping to feature this season

The competition for roles in the middle of the park is already high though, with Romeo Lavia hoping for a far easier season in terms of injury luck.

Another player who will be looking to make an impact is Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, with him already having plenty of experience working under new manager Enzo Maresca.
