Chelsea look as if they are set to miss out on the signing of one of their key targets in the final few hours of the first part of the summer transfer window.

The Blues have been pushing to sign Jamie Gittens from Borussia Dortmund in order to fill Enzo Maresca’s demands for a right-footed left winger to be brought into the squad.

The club have shown signs of backing the manager with the early addition of Liam Delap. Maresca was crucial in the Delap interest, and he will now be available for the Club World Cup.

Chelsea submitted a last-minute bid to sign Gittens before Tuesday’s deadline, with it being the last opportunity to add players to their squad before the competition gets underway in the United States.

Chelsea make final Jamie Gittens decision

After that was rejected, the Blues have made a decision over what they are now going to do, safe in the knowledge that the window will reopen again until September.

Journalist Kaveh Solhekol has stated that the Blues are going to return to the table next Monday. They believe the player is going to move during the summer.

He said: “Time has almost run out for Chelsea to sign Gittens today. Chelsea will try again after window reopens next Monday. They will not overpay for Gittens. They know Dortmund will sell the player this summer and he wants to move to Chelsea.”

Chelsea’s Jamie Gittens alternatives

Todd Boehly and co have certainly not been putting all their eggs in one basket when it comes to targets for a new winger this summer.

Chelsea are admirers of Alejandro Garnacho, and strongly considered making a move for him during the January transfer window.

As well as the Manchester United man, there are a lot of people at the club who are big fans of Morgan Rogers, with an opportunity being there to offer him Champions League football after Aston Villa missed out.

However, that deal would likely be far higher a price point than is being discussed for Gittens, meaning Chelsea are likely to continue with their pursuit for the Englishman when the window opens again.
