‘All going on’: Chelsea are now considering signing £85m striker in next few days

Journalist Simon Phillips has now claimed that Chelsea are back in the race to sign one big-name striker during the January transfer window.

He told the live blog page on his Substack that a deal to sign Sporting Lisbon star Viktor Gyokeres now cannot be ruled out to happen in the next week or so.

It had seemed as if the Blues’ ambition to sign a big name striker, in particular Gyokeres, had faded for this month.

With just a week to go in the window, reports are instead linking them to either young or short-term options if they are to bring anyone in.

Aston Villa youngster Jhon Duran has been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge, with Fabrizio Romano saying meetings are scheduled at Stamford Bridge to discuss that one.

If they were looking to go down the loan route, veteran star Karim Benzema is reportedly looking to get out of Saudi Arabia and make a return to European football.

Gyokeres not ruled out this month

However, Phillips has now not ruled out a move for a big name this month, saying Gyokeres is back on the agenda in West London.

He said: “It’s all going on now! Been told to not rule out Gyokeres for THIS WINDOW! They’ve been running the data on him all month are really impressed. Release clause around £80m-£85m. Chelsea enquired but were told they would have to pay it in full. But it’s never been dead…”

The price tag has been thought to have turned the Blues away from a deal for any striker this month, with it thought that their top target up to now had been Victor Osimhen.

However, the Nigerian international signed a new contract a few weeks’ ago that makes it very difficult to see him moving anywhere until the end of the season.
