Chelsea supporters may be encouraged to hear one of their first-team stars admit that he’s still got many more levels to reach in his own game.
Overall, Chelsea should reflect on a positive opening quarter of the season, where they sit fourth in the Premier League table after 10 rounds of fixtures.
For Blues manager Enzo Maresca, he’s quickly managed to implement a style of play during just a few months in the dugout. Finally, do the club have the head coach to be their long-term appointment?
Gary Lineker has been impressed by Maresca’s impact so far at Chelsea, especially as he’s calmed down what seemed like quite a chaotic environment.

Chelsea star Romeo Lavia insists he’s nowhere near his best yet
Chelsea’s Romeo Lavia, 20, has just made some interesting comments about his own form.
The Belgian defensive midfielder insists that he’s got so much more to give for the Blues and his levels will go up in time. In fairness, he’s only just started to get a run of starts together after such horrid luck with injuries since leaving Southampton and moving to Stamford Bridge in the summer of 2023.
When asked if everyone’s seeing the best version of himself, Lavia told Stadium Astro: “Definitely not. Not yet, because it’s crazy to say, but after a year of being out, I’ve come back and the only games I’ve played are against probably the best teams in the league. It’s a very good test to see where I’m at, but I definitely know I can go a gear above. It’s part of the process, so take it step by step, and I’m not worried about that.”
Troy Deeney claims people are underestimating the quality of Chelsea midfielder Lavia. That’s certainly not the case for Blues supporters watching him perform recently, though.
The deep-lying midfielder has started the last three consecutive Premier League matches, where he’s started to assert his dominance both on and off the ball.
Is Romeo Lavia just getting started?
Lavia’s certainly got faith in his quality and potential moving forward. Chelsea fans should definitely share that same enthusiasm and belief, too.
If the midfield star can keep himself fit for an extended period, he’s such a key weapon for Maresca’s new-look XI.
The fact that Lavia has already come in and benched World Cup winner Enzo Fernandez tells you a lot.
In the last three Premier League games, Lavia has started to show what he brings. Here’s a look at WhoScored’s ratings for the 20-year-old in the last few top-flight matches.
| Fixture | Minutes played | Match rating |
| Manchester United 1-1 Chelsea | 71 | 6.89 |
| Chelsea 2-1 Newcastle United | 72 | 6.77 |
| Liverpool 2-1 Chelsea | 53 | 6.79 |
Cole Palmer was spot on with his prediction about Chelsea teammate Lavia in pre-season. Back in the summer, he insisted that the midfielder would start to shine once he got the minutes to play.
