Chelsea have been left a bit surprised by the development of one of their players this season.
Chelsea are not having the greatest Premier League campaign, with Mauricio Pochettino‘s men currently sitting 10th in the table.
However, there have been a couple of standout performers in their squad this term, including Conor Gallagher. And according to The Athletic, the club never expected him to become a key figure and develop in the manner that he has.
The midfielder has only missed one Premier League game, which was because of suspension, and has captained Chelsea on multiple occasions.
It was the 24-year-old who won the Blues their last match, scoring two goals in their 3-1 win against Crystal Palace.
Chelsea shocked by Conor Gallagher’s development
It appears that Chelsea did not see Gallagher’s rise in the team coming. We do not think anyone did to be honest. After all, this is someone who the club looked willing to sell last year.
According to Sky Sports, Chelsea were actually in talks with Everton over the sale of Gallagher during the 2023 January transfer window.
He remained at Stamford Bridge, though, and has since gone on to become a key player under Pochettino.
It is now imperative that Chelsea keep hold of Gallagher, but it looks like the club are going to make a meal of this.
The Englishman’s contract expires in 2025 and he does not appear to be any closer to signing a new one. If that is not extended by the summer, it is being reported that Tottenham Hotspur will make a move for him.
But with the way Gallagher is playing at present, Chelsea really should not be allowing their midfielder to leave the club, especially for one of their rivals.
Losing the England international and to Tottenham would be a bitter pill for Chelsea supporters to swallow.
