Chelsea’s bold recruitment drive has led them to even more signings, including Geovany Quenda and Dario Essugo from Sporting Lisbon.

It was confirmed by Sporting earlier in March that Chelsea have agreed a deal to sign 17-year-old winger Geovany Quenda from them. Also, Dario Essugo will join the Blues once his season-long loan deal expires at Las Palmas.

For Quenda, he will stay put in Lisbon for now before moving to Stamford Bridge in the summer of 2026.

Blues head coach Enzo Maresca helped Chelsea sign Quenda after a private conversation sold the project and vision to the young player.

The greatest strengths of Geovany Quenda

Tiago Teixeira, who worked as an assistant coach at Sporting and worked alongside Quenda, is a massive admirer of Chelsea’s future signing.

Apparently, the skilful Portuguese winger is a major attacking threat when dribbling 1v1. The teenager’s “greatest strengths” are decision-making and his final ball.

“He (Quenda) is a very, very good dribbler. He’s impressive physically and can beat his man on the outside or on the inside,” Teixeira told The Athletic.

“He’s a very intense player, very committed. But I think his greatest strengths are his decision-making and his ability to play the final ball. He reads the game brilliantly.”

The NXGN list of the world’s 50 best young players includes Quenda in 11th spot. Also, Estevao Willian (2nd), Marc Guiu (31st) and Josh Acheampong (38th) make the cut.

Quenda’s future salary at Chelsea will be a significant upgrade on what he currently earns at Sporting. Fans should be very excited about what level he’s at by the time he joins next summer.

Geovany Quenda compared to Lamine Yamal

During the long interview with The Athletic, Teixeira went on to compare Quenda with Barcelona and Spain superstar Lamine Yamal.

Teixeira said: “I see similarities with Lamine Yamal. Both of them started playing senior football at 16, 17. Yamal is already playing for Spain but Quenda has just been called up by Portugal for the first time and I’m certain he’s going to be a regular in the national team for years to come, and a star of the Champions League.

“He will get better with age and keep growing in confidence. He has everything he needs.”

Even though Quenda and Lamal are both aged 17, it’s pretty obvious that the latter is a lot further along with his development.

It’s why we’re content with Chelsea signing Quenda spending the 2025/26 campaign improving with Portuguese giants Sporting before actually arriving in West London.

The fast wide player should get plenty of first-team action with Sporting. In terms of his international career, he’s still waiting for his senior debut after being an unused substitute in four matches.
