Chelsea were left shocked that Tottenham didn’t challenge them for Mauricio Pochettino, according to reports.
Chelsea recently confirmed that Mauricio Pochettino is the new head coach at Stamford Bridge, with the Argentine officially starting on 1 July.
The 51-year-old’s very familiar to English audiences already from his time at Tottenham, which did a lot to enhance his reputation as an attacking and progressive manager.
Now, he’ll look to prove himself across the city in west London.
Well-respected journalist Matt Law has explained that Chelsea couldn’t believe they didn’t have to fight off competition from Spurs to get Pochettino.
He claims that Spurs were never in contact with their former boss and didn’t consider him for their vacant position. Instead, they’ve now appointed Ange Postecoglou as their new boss and stolen him away from Celtic.
“What I can tell you to add to that is that Chelsea couldn’t believe it. Chelsea, when they started to get really hot for Pochettino, were worried for quite a long time that the call would come from Daniel Levy and he would tug on the heart strings, but it never came, and they were delighted it never came. That was the only thing they saw ruining it for them,” Law said on the Last Word On Spurs YouTube channel.
“Chelsea are as astonished as Tottenham fans are that a call never went in to Pochettino. But I am assured by people that I trust 100% that there was not even a text message or a WhatsApp.”
It feels like the Chelsea fanbase has warmed to Pochettino’s appointment, which is good news because each manager deserves a fresh start regardless of their previous jobs.
Spurs have gone with the more risky appointment of Postecoglou, but he plays eye-catching football and a decent reputation.
We certainly expect the Chelsea-Spurs showdowns to be fiery in next season’s Premier League.
