Chelsea were arguably left with no choice but to recall Trevoh Chalobah from his loan at Crystal Palace.
Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile are both out injured, while Axel Disasi looks set for a Chelsea exit this month.
Disasi is attracting interest from three Champions League clubs and was left out of Chelsea’s matchday squad for the 2-2 draw with Bournemouth.
At the same time, though, it looks like Chalobah is also starting to convince his bosses at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea no longer worried about Trevoh Chalobah not being a good fit for Enzo Maresca
Last summer, it was reported that Chelsea had doubts about Chalobah, feeling that he was not a suitable fit for Maresca.
However, fast forward to today, and the club are now singing a very different tune.
According to The Guardian, Chelsea now believe that the central defender can adapt to Maresca’s possession style. If true, that is quite the U-turn.
That being said, it has been claimed that Chelsea could still sell Chalobah in the summer.

Chelsea’s assessment of Trevoh Chalobah nonsensical
Chelsea deeming Chalobah as a bad fit for Maresca’s style of football just seemed like an excuse, and a really poor one.
After their heavy spending, the club were trying to make some money back, and Chalobah represented a good chance to do that. Coming through their academy, they would have made pure profit on him, of course.
Chalobah is a versatile defender who has also played in midfield. In fact, he has made almost 100 appearances there in his career.
| Trevoh Chalobah’s positions | Total number of appearances there |
| Centre-back | 144 |
| Defensive midfielder | 90 |
| Right-back | 20 |
| Left-back | 7 |
| Central midfielder | 6 |
Simply put, the former England U21 international is not the kind of defender you have to worry about in possession.
When you look at some of the mistakes that Disasi and Benoit Badiashile have made this season, for example, most Chelsea fans would probably trust him more than the French duo, yet their positions in the squad last summer remained safe.
This U-turn the club have now made with Chalobah has left them with egg on their face all things considered.
