The latest twist in a busy January transfer window is that Trevoh Chalobah is returning to Chelsea this month.

There have been plenty of transfer rumours flying around regarding Chelsea and their potential pursuit to sign a defender in January. It turns out that they’re doing just that without spending a penny.

The Athletic reports that Chelsea have activated a clause to recall Trevoh Chalobah from Crystal Palace.

Chalobah has been enjoying a season-long loan with Premier League rivals Palace, but the Blues have activated a break clause to bring him back to Stamford Bridge midway through the campaign.

Even though the 25-year-old centre-back established himself as a regular starter in Palace’s XI during the first half of the season, he’s now agreed to return to West London.

Chelsea’s plan for Trevoh Chalobah next season

According to The Telegraph, Chalobah gave the green light on his return to Chelsea for the rest of the season.

It is explained that the expectation remains that the central defender will be sold by the Blues in the summer. However, there’s a general agreement between the player and club that he can help Enzo Maresca’s squad in the second half of the this campaign.

Chalobah was made to train with Chelsea’s youngsters back in the summer when he was exiled from the first-team group for pre-season and put on the transfer market. Eventually, he did end up finding a great fit with Palace at Selhurst Park.

It’s crazy that he’s now returning to the club six months later, but the Blues do find themselves in a bit of a defensive crisis because of injuries to Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile.

Trevoh Chalobah is proper Chels

This entire Chalobah saga is really highlighting how ruthless football can be.

It feels completely wrong that the defender is giving up a successful loan at Palace to come help Chelsea, but perhaps it shows how much the academy graduate appreciates the club.

The Blues decided Chalobah wasn’t good enough when they allowed him to leave in the summer. Now, they want the 25-year-old player to be a short-term fit before selling him in the summer because he’s not in the club’s plans for next season.

Hopefully, Chalobah receives huge support and love from the Chelsea fanbase from now until the rest of his time with the club because of his unselfishness. He’s shown a loyalty that is remarkable to see.
