Chelsea have been hit with the news that one of their key players is set to miss the rest the rest of the season due to injury.

Defender Wesley Fofana’s nightmare fitness problems have continued as he has undergone surgery on his hamstring following a muscle problem.

The Frenchman had only just returned before the international break to the starting side after not playing since the start of December.

Given how big a fan Enzo Maresca is of the defender, he was thrown back into the starting side pretty much as soon as he was ready.

The manager had hinted that he could well be set for a prolonged period of time on the sidelines when he picked up the injury, however Fofana disagreed with Maresca’s diagnosis.

Wesley Fofana to miss Chelsea’s Club World Cup

This may well have been regretful looking back, with him now missing the rest of the Premier League campaign and giving a big opportunity to someone like Trevoh Chalobah to save his prospects at the club.

As the Blues prepare to bring Fofana back in the best possible shape he can be, they have reportedly made a decision that could impact their progress at the upcoming Club World Cup this summer.

According to journalist Ben Jacobs, the Blues are expected to leave the defender out of their squad who will travel to the United States with a big prize pool available to the winner.

“Fofana’s rehabilitation is with 2025/26 in mind. He is expected to miss the Club World Cup. Priority is to get him ready for next season.”

Wesley Fofana’s injury record

Since joining Chelsea, Fofana has spent more time injured than he has been available for selection for whoever is in charge of the club.

Chelsea are going to find it more and more difficult to build their future around the pairing of Fofana and Levi Colwill, and could well invest heavily in reinforcements this summer.

The Blues have been linked with Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace, and are confident he would be open to joining them at the end of the season.
