Not everyone has been fully on board with the methods utilised by Chelsea’s ownership in the transfer market since they took over.

Todd Boehly and co have completely transformed the first team squad at Stamford Bridge. Only Reece James remains in their plans from the side who won the Champions League less than four years ago.

A lot has been made of the more than £1bn that Chelsea have spent of late, and while they still seem to be complying with PSR rules, a lot of players signed in that time are yet to even make their debuts for the club.

Chelsea want an experienced centre-back in the summer

This is because they have been seen as opportunities for the future, and the likes of Estevao Willian and Andrey Santos are seen as players for the first team squad for next season.

The current first team squad is easily the youngest in the Premier League, and experience is something they are really lacking in key moments particularly up against the top sides.

It looks as if this has been noted by the decision makers at the club, with Liam Twomey suggesting that the plan for the summer is to bring in an experienced defender.

“He said on The Athletic FC’s Podcast: “Chelsea are looking to sign a centre-back next summer, an established one.”

The Blues did add Tosin Adarabioyo to their ranks over the summer, however that was again seen as an opportunistic deal after he was available on a free transfer.

The Blues have been linked with a number of top centre-backs who are more established than some on the younger ones they have been linked with in the past.

Ruben Dias is reportedly admired at Stamford Bridge, and while that deal will be extremely difficult to pull off it suits their desire to bring in a top name at the back.

Another name they have been linked to plenty in the past is Tomas Araujo, who has just made his return at Barcelona from a serious injury.

Araujo was reportedly on their list for January, however signing a centre-back this month now looks unlikely after recalling Trevoh Chalobah from his loan away.
