Chris Sutton has previewed this weekend’s upcoming match between Chelsea and Newcastle United.

Chelsea host Newcastle on Sunday afternoon at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League.

The Blues have made a decent start in the opening months of the 2024/25 campaign, but they’ve actually dropped down to seventh in the division table after some recent results.

Following Chelsea’s 4-1 away win over Panathinaikos on Thursday evening in the Conference League, they return to league action tomorrow afternoon.

Paul Merson has warned opposition teams will try to stop Cole Palmer, but he did score and assist in his previous game versus Newcastle last season. Hopefully, the Blues talisman can shine again after a quiet display last time out at Liverpool.

Chris Sutton predicts Chelsea vs Newcastle

BBC pundit Chris Sutton has tipped Chelsea to record a narrow win at home to Newcastle this weekend.

Sutton told BBC Sport: “Newcastle have scored only eight goals in their first eight league games, but I don’t think they have changed their style since last season…

“I am backing Newcastle to get a goal this time after two games without scoring, but everything points towards a Chelsea win at Stamford Bridge. With Cole Palmer in the team, they carry far more of a threat than the Magpies.

“Sutton’s prediction: 2-1.”

Chelsea & Newcastle head to head

In the last few meetings, it’s been a pretty close contest between Chelsea and Newcastle.

Here is a look at the previous five results between the top-flight rivals:

Chelsea and Newcastle clash again next Wednesday night at St James’ Park in the League Cup Round of 16. Let’s see which side goes into that contest with the upper hand.

For the Blues, we’d guess we’ll see two very different starting XIs because Maresca has rotated heavily between the league and cup this season.
