David Seaman has shared a theory that Manchester United are actually helping Chelsea out at the minute.

The retied England goalkeeper suggests that Man United’s struggles is helping to deflect some of the pressure away from Chelsea.

We’ve seen Man United and Chelsea dominate English football for large spells of the 21st century, but both teams look miles off the pace this season.

Erik ten Hag’s side sit eighth in the Premier League table right now, plus they were dumped out of the Champions League in the group stages. There’s always going to be gigantic pressure and scrutiny at Old Trafford due to the sheer size of the club.

For Chelsea, we think most recognise there’s a bit of a rebuild ongoing with such a young squad of players. However, Mauricio Pochettino’s team are still underperforming and sit 10th in the league with zero European football.

When asked to name his biggest underachievers of 2023, Arsenal legend David Seaman picked Chelsea.

He claimed on the Seaman Says podcast: “Chelsea are getting away with murder because of what Manchester United are doing and the attention that Manchester United are getting. For the amount of money Chelsea have spent, that’s my answer.”

Manchester United helping Chelsea

We’re still reading plenty of criticism in the media fired towards Chelsea, some of it justified and some of it a bit over the top.

We agree Pochettino should be getting more out of this side during the second half of the campaign.

Can they beat Middlesbrough in the Carabao Cup semi-finals to reach a final? Can they close the six-point deficit in the league to sixth-placed West Ham?

There’s definitely still room to salvage what’s been a poor campaign, but it will need one or two more players to hit their top level.
