Paul Merson has said Chelsea should consider trying to sign Marc Cucurella from Premier League rivals Brighton.
Cucurella, who cost Brighton £15.4million in the summer, has enjoyed a brilliant opening few months in English football. The 23-year-old Spaniard has looked a complete natural for the English game since a transfer to the Amex Stadium.
Cucurella assisted a late Brighton equaliser in a 1-1 draw against Chelsea this week, so the Blues have seen first-hand his kind of quality.
He’s a versatile left-sided player that’s having plenty of joy as a left wing-back, which is perhaps why Sky Sports pundit Merson has suggested him as a target to Chelsea given they use a system with wing-backs.
In addition, the Blues have lost Ben Chilwell to a long-term injury that could see him miss the rest of the season. Therefore, Marcos Alonso is the only available senior left wing-back right now at Stamford Bridge.
“‘If I was Chelsea I would go and get Cucurella, I would definitely go and get him and I would get [Yves] Bissouma,” Merson told Sky Sports (1 January, 2022), as quoted by The Metro.

Cucurella brilliant Chelsea suggestion
If Cucurella’s short Brighton career so far is anything to go by, he could be a success in the English division for a long time.
He’s got an incredible engine that allows to work tirelessly up and down the flank for 90 minutes. Also, the left-footer is extremely talented with the ball at his feet and likes to take on opponents.
The ex-Barcelona talent is under contract at Brighton until 2026 given his recent arrival, so surely any transfer would be really tough to sort. In addition, there is not yet speculation regarding his future.
Everton’s Lucas Digne has been linked as a possible January target for Chelsea to help solve their issue at left wing-back.
However, Cucurella is definitely someone that big clubs should be keeping a close eye on.
Incidentally, Chelsea were linked with him in 2020.
